Middle School Social Studies Teacher

Starting date:  July 2018

The primary function of The International School of Panama Teacher is to facilitate the students learning process and create productive environments in which students can develop skills they might need at present or in the future.  He or she provides within the classroom learning opportunities for the students and assists in other school programs working harmoniously with the administrative staff and parents in support of the ISP Teaching Philosophy, school policy, regulations, objectives and goals.

In ISP’s middle school, social studies teachers plan units of study that balance facilitating students’ increasingly sophisticated conceptual understandings with skill development and content coverage. Teachers utilize AERO standards and backwards plan from IB Diploma Programme Group 3 assessment objectives.

While an interactive online text – detailed below – is provided for each course, teachers also utilize additional online resources, library databases, and printed materials to support direct instruction and guided inquiry. In addition to traditional tests and researched essays, teachers plan performance assessments that allow students to demonstrate understanding, skills and content knowledge in a variety of fashions. These include but are not limited to: Socratic Seminars, debates, cross-age presentations, and hands-on projects that allow students to solve real-world problems and improve relevant systems.

Core class offerings in Middle School Social Studies are as follows:

- Grade 6: A world tour of contemporary and historical cultures through a geographical lens. Primary text utilized: TCI Geography Alive!

- Grade 7: A chronological historical inquiry into early and ancient humans, from cave dwellers through to Ancient India and China. Primary text utilized: TCI History Alive!

- Grade 8: An introduction to religious and societal systems of the Ancient World. Primary text utilized: TCI Civics Alive

- Note that curriculum documentation and collaboration is done through a Google Team Drive.

In addition to the core classes detailed above, Middle School Social Studies teachers also each offer an elective course known as a Wheel, which students rotate through every 9 weeks. The focus of the Wheel courses is as follows:

- Grade 6: Global Issues Network, service learning and community engagement.

- Grade 7: Model United Nations

- Grade 8: TedX Talks

For students who are interested in further pursuing these global issues Wheels beyond the allotted nine weeks, Middle School Social Studies runs an after-school global issues club where students participate in service learning projects and diplomatic simulations.
